Thái Ngọc (born 1942) is a Vietnamese insomniac. According to Vietnamese news organization Thanh Niên, he is best known for his claim of being awake for 46 years. Thanh Niên also claimed that Ngoc acquired the ability to go without sleep after a bout of fever in 1973, but according to the Vietnam Investment Review, there was no apparent cause.
He had a relatively normal life up until 1973 where after a fever he apparently lost the ability to sleep. Despite many attempts to fix the condition, and countless sleeping pills, he has now been awake for more than 40 years – as long, or longer, than many of us have been alive.
The normal human body normally suffers severe consequences from lack of sleep after just a couple of days. Studies on nightly sleeping habits carried out by the University of Pennsylvania and the Walter Reed Research Institute showed evidence that anything less than eight hours sleep a night can become costly to health.
On one hand scientists tell us that if we don’t sleep, we will die. On the other hand we have our Superhuman, and he has been awake for decades. We can learn from this amazing insomniac that the impossible is possible.
