Terracotta Army

In 1974 the most important archaeological discovery in the world took place when more than 8000 life-size clay warriors were uncovered in Xi’an, China. The clay army lies in the greatest mausoleum in the world, and archaeologists assert that it was meant to protect Emperor Qin Shi Huang in his journey after death. Each soldier was created with unique characteristics and was placed according to rank. Horses, weapons and other objects were also discovered.

Qin Shi Huang feared death and became obsessed with finding the elixir of life which would allow him to live forever.

He wanted to achieve immortality and rule over the universe, he was ruthless in his quest for the elusive elixir and would take his frustrations out on those who could not help him. He persecuted intellectuals and burnt books and is often described by historians as a megalomaniac.

He died in his late 40s from mercury poisoning after drinking the compound, believing it to be the elixir of life.
